The Challenge
OVERLOOKED POTENTIAL &
NEW WORK LANDSCAPES
Many of us spend a significant portion of our lives in our professional environments. To be exact up to 80% our waking hours.
Yet, we somehow lost focus when it comes to building thriving work environments in which teams feel a sense of belonging and becoming. Even mission-driven companies can struggle to cultivate a safe space for human connection and healthy team culture.
In recent years, there's been a significant push towards technological advancement and a productivity-focused, alpha mindset.
This drive for efficiency and innovation has brought incredible developments, yet it often overlooks the essence of our humaness and building a strong team culture. This comes with a growing cost to disconnection. Disengaged employees are far more likely to leave, costing companies up to 33% of a departing employee's annual salary (Employees Benefit News). Engaged employees, on the other hand, are 21% more productive (Aon Hewitt Engagement Report). So amidst this technological surge, there is a growing recognition of the need for balance.
Further the pandemic reshaped the way we work. New generations entering the workforce navigate a "remote-first" reality, while experienced employees adapt to a hybrid environment. These changes created a unique landscape where diverse work styles and values converge and need to be addressed.
New Work needs Inner Work - For New Work to succeed, it is not enough to change external structures and processes, but the inner attitude, clarity and communication of teams must take centre stage.

Where to start?
If you are not sure where to start and what it is you are looking for for your team, here is a little overview and some guiding questions that I found very helpful by Neue Narrative - the Magazine for New Work:
-
Deals with the questions: What is our basic orientation, the meaning and purpose of our actions? What are we needed for? Do we have a formulated purpose? Do all people in the team know the purpose?
-
Adresses the question of culture. Do we have a culture that focuses on people and their strengths? Do we know our passions and strengths? Do we help to develop them further? Do we create spaces for self-reflection and further development?
-
Create clearly defined areas of responsibility: Who is responsible for which issues? Who makes the decisions and where? Are all roles and rules documented and known to everyone?
-
Help us to align ourselves clearly and define frameworks within which team members can move freely. Do we have clear goals and priorities that everyone in the team knows about? Does everyone in the team align their work with the current strategy?
-
Need a balance, a mixture of self-awareness, empathy, getting to know my counterpart, but also a "system awareness", of the context and the circumstances around the team. Do we continuously work on our interpersonal relationships in the team? Do we have our own formats and roles that take care of relationship work?
-
Help us to align and prioritise. Do we have clear meeting agendas and meeting roles? Do our meetings give us clarity and energy? Do we use canvases and templates to get the best possible results?
-
Help answer the how of our work. Which values are important to us and should be visible and tangible in our work and towards the client?
